JANÁČEK Piano Sonata 1.X.1905 (From the Street, 1 October 1905)
Pianist Kirill Gerstein opens his solo recital with one of Beethoven’s earliest works, the delightful Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 7, followed by two powerful politically inspired pieces: Liszt’s Funérailles, which serves as an elegy for the failed Hungarian Revolution of 1848, and Janáček’s homage to a Czech laborer who was killed by Austro-Hungarian troops during a demonstration—the Piano Sonata 1.X.1905, also known as From the Street.
