Santa Fe, New Mexico | The Lensic Performing Arts Center presents Jazz at Lincoln Center: Songs We Love. Jazz at Lincoln Center, founded in 1987 as a summer concert series, is a prolific nonprofit organization that produces concerts at venues in New York, touring initiatives, digital programming, and educational outreach. Songs We Love is a program that features the brightest up-and-coming jazz artists performing classics from the 1920s through the 1950s. This year, under the musical direction of Riley Mulherkar, vocalists Shenel Jones, Vuyo Sotashe, and Brianna Thomas join an all-star band made up of New York’s rising stars to perform their way through four decades of music.
Beginning with the early blues and jazz of the 1920s and ending in the early 1950s, they’ll perform pieces by icons including Ma Rainey, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Judy Garland.
Ticket holders are invited to attend Program Notes, a free pre-performance talk featuring Santa Fe-based composer and jazz pianist John Rangel at 6:30 pm on February 2.
For over three decades, Jazz at Lincoln Center has been a leading advocate for jazz, culture, and arts education. Under the direction of Wynton Marsalis, Jazz at Lincoln Center has brought the art form of jazz from the heart of New York City to over 446 cities in more than 40 countries.
Nearly 200,000 students participate in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s education programs each year. Let Freedom Swing, from the renowned education department at JALC, is being offered in conjunction with the tour for Santa Fe Schools. The Lensic will host a free matinee performance through the PASS (Performing Arts for Student Success) program and has organized a masterclass with Riley Mulherkar for students at New Mexico School for the Arts.
