Being With Animals
Werner Herzog's Encounters with the Natural World
No filmmaker captures the beauty and mystery of the natural world quite like Werner Herzog. A lifelong wanderer, Herzog has followed his curiosity around the globe, telling stories of explorers and dreamers whose encounters with nature are wondrous, surreal, and sometimes dangerous. His films include Grizzly Man, Encounters at the End of the World, Cave of Forgotten Dreams, and his latest, Ghost Elephants.
Throughout his work, Herzog returns to a powerful idea: the world and its creatures are unfathomably complex, and our attempts to understand them are both admirable and perhaps futile. His films can be comical one moment and deadly serious the next, all told with a sense of wonder that makes them riveting and magical.
We’re honored to welcome Herzog on Sunday, November 8, 2026, at the Lensic Performing Arts Center in Santa Fe. He will discuss his life and films, including Ghost Elephants, which follows a South African biologist searching for descendants of the largest elephant ever recorded.
