Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company in The Spanish Room Now

What remains when a company revisits its own history?

The National Institute of Flamenco presents Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company in The Spanish Room NOW, a bold reimagining of one of the company’s most celebrated productions. Originally presented seventeen years ago, The Spanish Room created an intimate world where choreography, live music, and shifting relationships between dancers and musicians built a succession of ever-changing “rooms.” A table became a gathering place, a performance surface, a bar. A chair moved from the architecture of the ensemble into the intimate territory of a solo. Gauze concealed one environment and rose to reveal another.

The Spanish Room NOW returns to that world through the company Yjastros has become. Selected choreography, music, and scenic images are revisited, compressed, and newly inhabited, not reproduced. A new generation of dancers and musicians brings nearly two decades of additional training, performance, and lived experience into the rooms. The work changes because the people inside it have changed.
