New Mexico Jazz Festival
The Regina Carter Quintet
Join us at 5:30 pm for Meet the NEA Jazz Master: Regina Carter in conversation with A.B. Spellman, retired National Endowment for the Arts Deputy Chairman, jazz historian, and poet.
“Regina Carter creates music that is wonderfully listenable, probingly intelligent and, at times, breathtakingly daring…taking the listener into the future of jazz” (Time Magazine). A MacArthur Fellow and Doris Duke Artist Award recipient, Carter is jazz’s leading violinist known for seamlessly traversing jazz, R&B, Latin, classical, blues, and everything in between.
The Regina Carter Quintet features Regina Carter, violin; Xavier Davis, piano; Chris Lightcap, bass; Alvester Garnett, drums; and Carla Cook, vocals.
Carter’s albums include Paganini: After a Dream, based on a 2002 concert in Genoa, Italy, in which she was honored to be the first nonclassical violinist to play Niccolò Paganini’s Il Cannone (“The Cannon”), the legendary violin built by Giuseppe Guarneri in 1743; I’ll Be Seeing You: A Sentimental Journey, a reinterpretation of songs from the 1920s to 1940s and tribute to her mother; Reverse Thread, an exploration of African folk music and the African diaspora; and Southern Comfort, a musical journey tracing her father’s roots in the American South; Ella: Accentuate the Positive, celebrates the music and spirit of her inspiration, musical legend Ella Fitzgerald. Her latest release, Swing States: Harmony in the Battleground, sets out to deliver an optimistic and encouraging project that extols the importance of taking part in the democratic process.
