Ballet is a Man Called Jock

The Legacy of a Navajo and Puerto Rican Principal Dancer
Presented by the International Museum of Dance & ChromaDiverse
With collection support from the New York City Ballet
Join us at the Lensic Performing Arts Center in Santa Fe for a captivating evening celebrating the life, legacy, and cultural impact of Jock Soto—a trailblazing Diné (Navajo)-Puerto Rican artist, born and raised in New Mexico. The evening will include a screening of the award-winning documentary film “Water Flowing Together” by Gwendolen Cates, a talkback with Mr. Soto and Ms. Cates, and the launch of “Jock Soto: The Dancer and His Life,” a searchable digital archive.
“Ballet is a man called Jock,” said The New York Times when Mr. Soto retired. Lauded as one of the most influential ballet dancers of his generation, Mr. Soto had a career with the New York City Ballet (NYCB) that broke barriers and expanded the definition of classical excellence. This event honors his artistry, as well as the stories, identities, and cultural traditions that he continues to embody and uplift.
Mr. Soto’s story will inspire and educate artists, teachers, choreographers, NYCB enthusiasts, balletomanes, and the general public. By making his story accessible, we strive to illuminate Mr. Soto’s invaluable contributions to the world of ballet.
