Ladysmith Black Mambazo
In 1960, young Joseph Shabalala dreamed of forming a singing group while working on his family’s farm in apartheid South Africa. That dream became Ladysmith Black Mambazo, a global phenomenon celebrated for six decades for their harmonious isicathamiya style and messages of peace. Now led by his three sons, the group continues to thrive.
The group has won five Grammy Awards and warmed the hearts of audiences worldwide with uplifting vocal harmonies, signature dance moves, and charming onstage banter. The late former South African President Nelson Mandela designated the group “South Africa’s cultural ambassadors to the world,” a title the members carry with them with the highest honor.
